The art of the silk tie

A handmade silk tie, sewn in Paris or in Italy

Each Dare in Paris silk tie starts with a 100% silk shell woven in the Lake Como region of Italy, then is traced, cut and sewn by hand. The three fold ties, in grenadine, woven silk, printed twill or ancient madder, are made in our Paris workshop, holder of the Fabriqué à Paris label. The seven fold ties, in printed madder silk, are made in Italy by a family workshop the Maison has worked with from the start.

About 147 cm (58 inches) long, with a blade about 8 cm (3.15 inches) wide. Each tie leaves the workshop in its box, sealed with the Maison’s wax seal, with a handwritten note.

Three fold and seven fold: two ways to build a tie

A three fold tie is the classic construction: the silk is folded three times around a wool based interlining that runs the whole length, and both ends are tipped by hand. A clean, structured fall, and the dimple forms under the knot.

A seven fold tie is cut from a single large square of silk folded seven times on itself, with no interlining and no lining: the folds alone give the body. Soft and light, both ends hand rolled.

The thickness of a tie comes from the silk, woven or printed, not from the number of folds. The thickest ties in the collection are the three fold ties in woven silk, grenadine above all.

Which silk tie for the office, a wedding or the evening?

At the office, a plain grenadine or a small motif goes with every suit and every collar.

For a wedding, choose a lighter tie by day and a deeper one in the evening: a seven fold in printed madder brings relief to a sober outfit. After dark, the motif can be bolder.

How do you care for a silk tie?

Silk does not go in the washing machine and reacts badly to water: a drop leaves a ring as it dries. Store the tie flat or rolled, away from direct light, and leave any stain to a professional dry cleaner.

If a crease persists, hold a garment steamer about ten centimeters (four inches) from the silk, and never place an iron directly on it.
