Ancient madder silk tie, blue with red and yellow geometric print, three fold

We interline your ancient madder silk tie along its full length so that it keeps its shape. As in a jacket made by a tailor, the interlining is wool based. The lining of the wide blade and of the narrow blade finishes the piece cleanly. It is this interlining that lets the dimple, la goutte, the vertical hollow under the knot, form and hold.

Our ancient madder silk is printed and finished in the Lake Como region of Italy : deep colours, with an intensity only madder gives, a matte, chalky surface and the famous peach-skin hand.

The story of madder silk

Madder silk takes its name from madder, Rubia tinctorum, the plant whose root gave textiles their deep reds for centuries. Madder silk is prized for its rich colour and its subtle nuances, for its durability and its characteristic lustre. Purists love its peach-skin hand above all.

How do I knot my tie? Which knot should I go for?

It is the most interesting question, and the answer is yours to find. We can only give a few pointers.

Silk has some give, which makes it very pleasant in the hand and easy to knot.

We choose the four-in-hand. With the interlining, the tie has body. The double knot, the Windsor, is a large knot by nature, greedy with cloth, thick by definition ; in our view the two together look heavy. The half Windsor, close to the four-in-hand, remains an option.

The double knot, on the other hand, is perfect on a tie without interlining, ideally in printed silk : see our seven fold ties.

Good to know : for the proportions, wear your tie with a shirt whose collar spread is fairly wide or very wide. Prefer a collar band taller than 1 in (2.5 cm) as well, to show off the knot and the tie.

Bonus : the knot shows your creative side, the mood of the moment, the care and the passion you put into it.

How do I wear my tie in a more relaxed, natural way?

Once your tie is knotted, leave the narrow blade outside the wide one. Or let it slip out as the knot forms, for a look that is racier and no less elegant.

What do I wear my ancient madder silk tie with?

A grey or blue suit, plain or chalk stripe, but above all enjoy yourself. Madder's deep tones belong to autumn and winter cloth : flannel, tweed, corduroy.
