Men's silk scarves

A Dare in Paris men’s silk scarf is worn open over a jacket, slipped into a collar or tied short, by men and women alike. Two shapes: the long plain scarf in silk twill with hand sewn fringes, made by hand in Naples, and the printed tube scarf sewn in Paris, which holds without a knot. Silk woven in the Lake Como region, for the city and for winter evenings.

The art of the silk scarf

A men's silk scarf, made by hand in Naples and in Paris

Every Dare in Paris scarf starts with silk twill woven in the Lake Como region, and every piece is worn by men and women alike. The long scarf, 35 x 165 cm including fringes, is made by hand in Naples: its fringes are woven separately in silk thread, then sewn on by hand. The tube scarf, 33 x 145 cm, is sewn in Paris as a closed tube lined with silk, with hand rolled edges. Silk twill is thin, so either shape slips under a coat collar without bulk.

Long scarf or tube scarf: our two shapes

The long scarf is worn open over a jacket, slipped into a collar or tied short. It comes in plain, deep colors: green, burgundy, brown, midnight blue, sky blue, orange and yellow, plus an ivory piece for the dinner jacket. The tube scarf is sewn as a closed tube and lined with silk: it holds on its own around the neck, without a knot. Printed with paisley, geometric or animal motifs, it brings the pattern where the long scarf brings the color.

How to wear a silk scarf with a coat or a dinner jacket

Open, both ends falling freely on either side of the lapels: the simplest gesture. Slipped inside the collar of a shirt or a sweater, only the loop shows and the color reads close to the face. Or tied short, one turn around the neck and the ends tucked under the coat. For black tie, the ivory long scarf is worn open over the dinner jacket, with one of our silk bow ties at the collar.

Frequently asked questions about silk scarves

How do you tie a silk scarf?

The most common is the Parisian knot: pass the scarf around the neck, cross the ends in front, bring the long end up under the loop and let it fall in front. For a more discreet result, fold the scarf in half lengthwise, pass it behind the neck and slip both ends through the loop: this lace knot holds best under a coat. Our guide on how to tie a silk scarf shows each step.

What is the difference between a silk scarf and a silk square?

A scarf is longer than it is wide: it drapes, floats over a jacket or ties at the neck. A silk square, 90 x 90 cm at Dare in Paris, is folded and tied at the neck, in the hair or on a bag. See our collection of silk squares.

How do you wear a silk scarf with a coat?

Let the silk show at the lapel rather than burying it. On a dark coat, choose a plain scarf in a deep color, or midnight blue tone on tone to stay discreet. On a light or patterned coat, the printed tube scarf is the easier match.

How do you care for a silk scarf?

Silk does not go in the washing machine and reacts badly to water: a single drop leaves a ring as it dries. A stain is removed only by a professional dry cleaner. Store the scarf flat or rolled, away from direct light. If a crease persists, treat it with a garment steamer held about ten centimeters, or four inches, away from the fabric, and never place an iron directly on the silk.

What is a silk tube scarf?

It is a scarf sewn as a closed tube rather than a flat band, lined with silk, with hand rolled edges. Slipped under an open collar, it holds on its own without a knot and shows its motif as soon as the coat opens. It is the easiest silk scarf to wear all day: it does not slip and does not come undone.
